CATHERINE HENRY

Catherine is well known and highly respected in the health and medical litigation arena, with specialist knowledge accumulated over twenty plus years.

She has successfully pursued hundreds of claims against health care facilities and medical providers. She has litigated some of the highest profile cases in the field.

Catherine has a special interest in women’s health, particularly obstetrics and gynaecology, and has written and commented on the legal aspects of reproductive medicine.

Catherine is both expert and highly experienced in health professional disciplinary matters. As a senior solicitor at the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission, she investigated complaints against medical practitioners, psychologists and pharmacists with complaints and proceedings before various professional disciplinary bodies. She has also acted for various health professionals, including nurses, pharmacists and psychologists in health disciplinary matters and has been a Legal member of boards of inquiry hearing complaints against pharmacists.

Catherine has long been active in mental health advocacy for both adults and adolescents and in 2008, was appointed to the Mental Health Review Tribunal as a Legal Member.

Catherine regularly presents to lawyers and community groups on health and medical law, and has lectured to law and psychiatry students at the University of Newcastle.

From 2004-2009, Catherine was the President of the Newcastle Law Society. In this role, she led and implemented many significant new initiatives for the local legal profession and community of Newcastle and the Hunter. In particular, she led the campaign for a redeveloped justice precinct in Newcastle, coordinating the Hunter Courts Working Party. Both state and federal governments have since announced their commitment to this project.

Catherine is in demand as a commentator on legal issues in local Newcastle media.

An active contributor to the wider Newcastle community, Catherine serves on several community boards.
